INHIBITION OF RETURN AT MULTIPLE LOCATIONS: TESTING THE ATTENTIONAL MOMENTUM VIEW

Abstract
Using the multiple-cuing paradigm, the present study tested the attentional momentum view at multiple locations, and explored the impact of exposure duration of peripheral cue on the capacity of inhibition of return (IOR). Experiment 1 aimed to investigate the influence of central cue on the capacity of IOR. The results indicated that both central cue and stochastic assignment of the number of peripheral cue can facilitate the strength and capacity of IOR. Thus, the fundamental paradigm of studying the capacity of IOR must be similar to what done by Danziger et al (1998). Determining the impact of exposure duration of cue on the capacity of IOR in successive and simultaneous cueing conditions are the goals for experiment 2 and 3,respectively. The analysis showed that the capacity of IOR increased gradually with the increment of exposure duration in nonadjacent condition, but is not for the adjacent condition. Attentional momentum view can not explain our results. Therefore, the results tend to support the role of inhibition in IOR.
